Crossing the border of life & death
Illegal immigrants are considered a problem in most countries. This also applies for the US but in many cases the illegal immigrants from South America are contributing to the local economy. The intrusion have become an entire industry and not only gangs and outlaws benefit from the human smuggling but also respected citizens such as politicians and company owners.
I covered a story about a dead girl found in the borderland between the US and Mexico. To make it even worse the girl was apparently a mother of an infant child. Through thorough investigation I managed to find a relative on the Mexican side of the border and the child was thereby handed a brighter future than the one of a Latin orphan in the US.
This story would appear to have roots in unexpected parts of the American society. Whereas many volunteers are trying to limit the smuggling of humans some are profiting on the immigrants. One of these people is Mayor of Nogales, Arizona, Richard Black. During my interview with Mr. Black it became clear that he was not fond of the work carried out by the Minute Men, a local group of vigilantes trying to minimize the amount of illegal immigrants through border patrols. This was because of his involvement and usage of these immigrants. It seems his next of kin was profiting from various sweatshops based in the US. As for the girl Mr. Black was of cause deeply sorry about her fate. However he didn’t seem interested in imposing serious changes to society in order to reduce the number of illegal immigrants on his side of the border. Such changes will have to come from a higher office perhaps the government if anything is to change.
